Body Benefits: Exploring the effects of Yoga with Kathleen Booyse

 

When Kathleen Booyse quit her career in the film industry to pursue a more nurturing role as a yoga teacher, she found a calling to help people understand their bodies in a way that goes deeper than just the physical. We sat down with Kathleen as she shared her passions for learning as well as teaching the multiple ways in which yoga benefits the body.

Kathleen completed her teacher training at The Shala – Cape Town Yoga School in 2015 and has been on a transformational journey since.  Due to her mother’s influence as a dance instructor, Kathleen’s understanding of movement and spirituality acted as a stepping stone into the world of yoga. Kathleen loves working with beginners, especially people who haven’t done yoga. When she began her yoga journey, none of her friends were involved in this practice and this motivated her to find her own path. Her focus is on giving people insight into yoga, making information available in all senses – emotional, physical, mental and spiritual.

 

With a strong interested in physiology and anatomy, she strives to educate her students about the relationship between the physical body with the energetic and spiritual bodies. “You do not need to be doing the splits or backbends in order to reap the rewards of doing yoga”. Kathleen feels strongly about the holistic view of yoga and highlights the importance of addressing mental health issues through movement and meditation. Her own journey of being diagnosed with Bipolar has allowed her to use yoga as a tool and share her knowledge with students with depression, anxiety and other illnesses.


Kathleen’s dedication to learning is continued through her own practice as she regularly attends classes and courses that allow her to constantly grow and evolve. Her mentor; Tamsin Sheehy, also the owner of The Shala, continually challenges her to keep acquiring and sharing her knowledge. “It is all about education and giving students something to take home after every practice.” Kathleen expressed how happy she is to share her experiences and knowledge. In the end, she just wants people to know yoga.

“I get excited when I can give people useful information”

It was not too long after becoming a yoga teacher that Kathleen realized her potential for healing. She is currently studying Specialised Kinesiology, a practice that focuses on energy meridians. The focus of Kinesiology is to look at the overall well-being of a person and boost them to their full potential. The holistic approach strives to take you to a full state of health in all levels. For her, Kinesiology is simply yoga in another form.

Kathleen shared her surprise when she mentioned the amount of people she has spoken to who do not know about their own body. With this in mind, the concept of Body Benefits workshop arose. This workshop is an exploration into the benefits of Yoga poses in relation to the internal systems and organs of the body. Whilst Yoga Asana offers incredible toning of the muscular and skeletal systems, this workshop focuses on what else Asana does for our internal systems.

“This workshop is designed for people who want to improve their health as well as knowledge of their health.”, says Kathleen. The practice itself is not physically demanding, but you are sure to leave the workshop feeling informed and insightful.

The workshop will be broken down into the 5 body systems; respiratory, circulatory, lymphatic, digestive and neural. The goal is that everyone who attends the workshop receives enough information as to what goes on “behind-the-scenes” so that they begin to understand why you are doing things.

The practices you learn during this workshop are simple and effective and will benefit all bodies. The notes you will receive will aid in creating a well rounded and effective home practice, morning ritual and cleansing habits.


“Your practice brings up what is happening in your body”, Kathleen highlighted, “You need to embrace that. The pose isn’t making you angry, it is bringing out what is stored up in you.”

Kathleen’s humble approach to teaching is what makes her so unique. “I can only teach what I know. People will resonate with me or they wont”. She highlighted the importance of not pushing yourself 24/7 every day. In order to change the way you feel, you need to start changing the little things.

 

Kathleen’s daily mantra reflects her characteristics and essence;

“Today I will be conscious in the way that I see and the way that I think. I will be aware in the way that I listen and the way I speak. I will be authentic in the way that I feel and the way that I act”
