Foster Your Roots (And Grow Your Practice)

As vinyasa can be primarily a shoulder weight-bearing practice, yogis often find themselves on their hands. It might be downward dog to rest and re-calibrate, fluidly moving through a vinyasa, or balancing on the hands themselves. There usually is an emphasis to cultivate shoulder, wrist strength and mobility to the extent that focus is taken away from the legs and feet, which are our roots and foundation.

This workshop, focused on the lower body, has been designed to give you better awareness of your legs and feet, and understand their relevance to your practice. We will strengthen the full circumference of the thighs through lunging asanas, drills and exercises that require active rooting and adduction.

We will have a closer look at the hip flexors to understand why we want these to be as strong as they are flexible, and look at the role they play in a variety of postures from backbending, to core, to arm balance, and inversions. Throughout the whole of the practice, we will look at the subtleties of the feet, and how the toes affect the legs.

In shifting your attention back to your roots, you will gain insights into how harnessing the power of your legs makes for an integrated asana practice.
